Precipitation since March 1 has been only 0.74 inch, which is 32 percent of the normal 2.28 inch. Since the end of April, topsoil moisture in the first 8 inches has dropped 5 points to 18 percent compared to 26 percent last year at this time. Temperatures so far in May, are averaging 8 degrees warmer than normal. Winter wheat is being stressed during the afternoon heat. Some "burn down" is noted in a few fields. Pastures and alfalfa growth is limited, except where irrigation is available. Tulips and lilacs are in bloom. About half of the trees have leafed out.
