Notes: There was a precursor short hail storm about 2:15PM. Later it hailed and rained very hard from 4:30 to 4:45. Suddenly the hail stopped and the sun came out. 2.2 inches of precip. fell altogether during the two squalls. (Submitted 4:30 PM on day of storm) Upon examination after the hail pad had dried, I made the following observations of the cratering and "glacial" history of this hail pad. Previous pads that were not precisely leveled allowed "glaciers" of freezing rain to move in integrated tracks down and across the pad. The pad of 6.21.09 was precisely leveled. This allows the following observations: 1) Tiny pits and bumps mark impacts of rice-sized hard hail stones that that were hitting the steel barn roof as we approached it. This precursor storm (2:15 PM) was very short. 2. Larger impacts show the impact of soft pea-sized hail and even softer viscous blobs from the later storm (4:30-4:45 PM)that made impacts up to 3/8 inch in diameter. 3. The viscous blobs could not flow downhill and off the edge as they did on a previous occasion (11/13 perhaps?), but coalesced into several "mare" of variable size from the lunar example. In the deeper parts of the "mare" the small rice-sized impact craters were erased by impacts from melting pea size hail stones and the combined weight of slush and hail stones accumulating in the "mare". I mention these details because I have been very uncertain in my interpretation of hail pads and am trying to learn what can be learned from impact history during the course of a storm.
